Ballard’s Manufacturing Engineering & Development team has an immediate opportunity for an Ink Process Development Engineer to increase our ink processing capability at our Burnaby Manufacturing facility.
Ballard's culture embraces performance, creativity, development and balance. We exceed expectations, invent and innovate and in turn are rewarded and recognized. As pioneers, we strive to explore, learn and break new ground and in return we are provided with opportunities to develop our skills through professional development and learning. Not only do we enjoy what we do here at Ballard; we balance our passion for challenge, success and achievement with our passion for fun and enjoyment.
In addition to providing leadership in the area of ink processing and working closely with Design and Production Teams, the primary responsibilities will include:
· Leading the efforts in developing, maintaining and improving processes for the manufacture of catalyst and carbon inks for fuel cells, · Establishing and maintaining process engineering discipline in the area of ink formulation and preparation and to ensure that these processes achieve a Six Sigma level of capability, · Defining the properties needed to characterise an ink and the methods (including appropriate MSA) to measure these properties, · Providing leadership to the design and process development groups to drive to common design and process elements to achieve cost reduction and process simplification, · Using screening DOE’s, develop correlations and transfer functions linking ink characteristics to target product and coating process requirements, · Using optimisation DOE’s, develop correlations and transferring functions linking critical raw material and process variables to the critical ink characteristics, including coating and printing performance and · Using physics and scientific principles, explaining the mechanisms behind the correlations developed.
A Degree in Chemical Engineering or BSc is required. 5-10 years experience in ink and/or slurry product and process development experience in a manufacturing environment is required. Proven understanding of ink and slurry designs and formulation and how they are affected by process design is a requirement. Experience in process design and documentation including preparation of PFMEAs, PFDs, safety analyses and understanding of P&IDs, as well as in project management, in the area of process implementation, including budgeting and team leadership is a definite asset.
Ballard values diversity in the workplace and is committed to Employment Equity. We encourage applications from all qualified candidates.
