THE POSITION

 

Based in Burnaby, BC and reporting to the VP and Chief Commercial Officer, the Marketing Manager will lead a small team of marketing/communication professionals and play a key role in developing and executing the company's marketing and communications strategy. Domestic and international travel will be required for this role.

 

The successful candidate will be expected to deliver on the following key priorities:

 

·         Help guide and implement the company's marketing research in support of strategies and plans, which identify marketing opportunities, direct marketing, and new project development. Work with department managers and corporate staff to develop long-range business plans for the company.

 

·         Play a key role in research, development, and implementation of a Brand and Communication strategy, standards and practices company-wide that elicit the behavior, emotion and recognition objectives of the company.

 

·         Coordinate the planning and development of company marketing and communications materials, development of key messages for all audiences to communicate the company's core brand identity. Provide content of press releases, copy for marketing materials, annual reports, advertisements, and other related material. Lead the Web Manager to ensure messaging is consistent with overall marketing and communication objectives.

 

·         Coordinate agencies and internal team members where appropriate to execute all communications activities and public relations (marketing materials, advertising, customer communications, direct mail, marketing campaigns, press releases, content for trade publications, etc.). Manage media relations, research editorial opportunities and build relationships with key industry media. Supervise the preparation, issuance, and delivery of sales materials, exhibits, and promotion programs.

 

·         Support the Product Marketing process including: driving consistency over the technology and product roadmaps, detailed product specifications and competitive differentiation. Establishing marketing tools for successful product introductions through creation of clear messages, technical marketing and communication documents.

 

 

CANDIDATE PROFILE

 

This role requires a highly capable marketing leader with a track record of marketing technology or highly engineered products, creatively transforming technology into practical business applications. Specific experience and knowledge of the fuel cell or alternative energy sector is not required, the successful candidate must be comfortable around technology and engineering based businesses and have the aptitude to learn Ballard's offerings and technology, how they work and how they will compete in the marketplace and solve customer needs.

This individual will have a track record of deeply understanding the market and customers, and the ability to make hardnosed, fact-based recommendations in the interest of maximizing business success is critical.

 

·         Results orientation, as evidenced by the ability, energy and tenacity to move major initiatives forward, injecting pace and focus, while consistently thinking of quality and effectiveness of the efforts. A track record of setting and achieving aggressive business targets, enabled by focused strategic choices, strong operating discipline, in a lean hands-on working environment.

 

·         Leadership and personal impact as shown by a compelling, credible and flexible communications style that will carry weight with both technical and business communities. Personal passion, success in explaining and gaining buy-in to new concepts, and effective listening and relationship building skills are necessary. He/she would have shown the ability to understand cultural nuances and business practices in the varied international locations particularly relevant to Ballard e.g. India, Europe, Japan, and North America.  In addition, the successful candidate will have a track record in mobilizing and inspiring small teams to deliver exceptional results. 

 

·         Strategic Orientation demonstrated as an outstanding performer in a dynamic, customer-driven organization that is regarded for superior products/services and the freshness and innovation of its approach to the market. This individual will have a track record of deeply understanding the market and customers, and making productive and profitable links between the realities of engineering and technology and those of the marketplace. Strategic, analytical and intellectually aggressive, he or she has a track record of leading major strategic initiatives, focusing on the core business issues, defining challenges and goals, and setting strategic direction to accomplish longer-term objectives. It is essential that the candidate take a global view of markets, channels, competitors and communications. The person should be able to point to successful worldwide product strategies, as well as marketing and distribution programs that they have had a meaningful role in. He or she will be a "quick study" of new situations who is able to clearly recognize value levers and identify the highest-impact improvement opportunities.

 

·         Industry Competencies Specific experience in distributed energy, alternative energy, publicly traded companies, or technology driven companies at the early stage of adoption is a plus.  Agency and consulting experience is also a plus, provided all other criteria is satisfied.

 

REQUIREMENTS

 

·         At least 10 years experience in the marketing of technology or highly engineered products, preferably as it relates to the early market adoption stage

·         Proven track record of leading and inspiring teams to deliver exceptional results

·         Experience of the alternative energy sector is desirable, but not essential

·         International experience and perspective is required
