Global Payroll and Benefits Senior Manager - Ottawa, Ontario

Reporting to the Head of Global Human Resources, the Global Payroll and Benefits Senior Manager provides leadership and direction for the end-to-end global payroll and employee benefits functions.

 Key responsibilities include the following:


  • Serve as subject matter expert for all aspects of global payroll, including payroll tax and reporting and for the implementation of any new third party payroll platforms
  • Oversee the execution of all activities related to payroll, ensuring regulatory and legislative compliance and ensure the accurate and timely administration, remittance and reporting of global payroll related activities
  • Manage third party vendor support in accordance with service agreements and contracts
  • Lead payroll project execution for any global expansion initiatives, including investigating, recommending and implementing any new third party global payroll providers
  • Evaluate and analyze existing global payroll policies, procedures and processes to identify improvement or enhancement opportunities and implement solutions to address them
  • Produce relevant and timely reports, providing the leadership team with in-depth analyses, identifying issues and trends
  • Lead and coach payroll team, setting expectations and monitoring activities, providing performance feedback and coaching, and developing skills
  • Maintain confidentiality of any payroll, private employee information and any proprietary information, ensuring payroll information is secure and conforms to privacy regulations
  • In collaboration with the Finance and Payroll team, ensure that the financial related requirements are met, including providing necessary documentation and explanations during payroll audits

Employee Benefits

  • Oversee the execution of all activities related to global employee benefit coverage
  • Ensure compliance with the various regulatory reporting in each country
  • Lead the employee benefit renewal processes for every country and corporate subsidiary, including providing recommendations for changes to carriers or plan design
  • Manage annual enrollment processes, ensuring communications, enrollments and reporting are completed in a timely manner
  • Maintain a solid understanding of the various company pension and 401k plans to ensure compliance with legislation and accurate administration in each country
  • Direct all of the benefits administration work carried out by other team members including day-to-day activities such as accurate invoice payments and timely responses to benefit and pension plan queries
  • Act as the subject matter expert on all aspects of escalated or high-risk employee benefits and pension issues or concern
  • Ensure processes are in place to ensure all aspects of employee benefits affecting payroll are communicated to the Payroll team in a timely manner

 Special Projects

  • Lead and/or support special projects/initiatives


The ideal candidate will have the following:

  • University degree in a relevant discipline and professional designation
  • Minimum of ten years’ experience managing global and complex payrolls and employee benefit programs as well as effectively leading a Payroll and Benefits team
  • Strong knowledge of payroll mechanics, year-end processes, payroll tax filings and functional reporting
  • Experience working with multiple global payrolls and benefit programs
  • Proven track record in a corporate global payroll and benefits manager role
  • Excellent analytical, numeric, research, and problem solving skills
  • Exceptional interpersonal, communication (written and oral) and negotiation skills
  • Demonstrated ability to lead, delegate, multi-task and work under pressure
  • Unquestionable integrity and work ethic, sound judgment and decision making
  • Excellent time management and organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Significant technology skills, in particular with the Microsoft Office Suite and Human Resources Management Systems
  • Ability to be cleared under CGP (Controlled Goods Program)
