Duties

 

  • Displays a rigorous approach to safety through excellent housekeeping and adherence to all applicable AECL safety-related policies and procedures;
  • Performs assigned analyses correctly in accordance with applicable AECL procedures and laboratory standards;
  • Handles hazardous/radioactive materials, as specified by WHMIS, educational training, or AECL procedures;
  • Performs appropriate Quality Control (QC) tests along with analytical measurements, and reports results to the Analytical Science QA Officer;
  • Documents analytical processes and results in a clear and concise manner and in accordance with applicable AECL procedures and laboratory standards;
  • Monitors the condition of laboratory equipment he/she uses and is responsible for the maintenance of this equipment to ensure quality standards for analytical results are not unduly affected by the condition of the analytical equipment;
  • Contributes to the solution of quality-related problems by notifying the Group Leader of these related problems, and then works to develop solutions.

 

 

Qualifications

 

  • A B.Sc. Degree or Technology Diploma in a relevant Physical Science, including training in performing analytical measurements and significant knowledge of chemistry.
  • A minimum of two years of experience in performing analytical measurements is required, as is experience with Quality Assurance principles and applications would be preferred.
  • Specific knowledge of the analytical measurements for which he/she is responsible;
  • A demonstrated ability to recognize and to handle hazardous materials safely.
  • Must be able to produce clearly written procedures and reports of measurement results.
  • Must be competent in the use of MS Office software, especially Word and Excel.
  • Must be able to work effectively independently and/or in a multi-disciplinary team.
  • Must be able to select and apply appropriate routine analytical procedures to satisfy the needs of the customers, and to seek advice when in doubt.  Must exhibit proper decision-making.
  • Must have very good verbal and written communication skills to interact effectively with customers, co-workers, and supervision.
  • Excellent organizational skills for tracking analytical and QC data are also required.
  • Candidates must be prepared to work wearing personal protective clothing and equipment, including respirators.
  • Must possess or be willing to obtain a working knowledge of the following AECL support / compliance programs as they relate to analytical science operations:
    • Radiation Protection,
    • Environmental Protection,
    • Occupational Health and Safety
    • Security, and
    • Emergency Preparedness.
  • Must possess mature work ethics and be able to work with minimal supervision.
  • Normal laboratory operations are conducted during regular daytime hours and chemical technologists are not normally on call on off-shift hours, however, must be prepared to take call should operational requirements dictate the necessity for such a measure.
