Duties

 

AECL has an immediate opening for a person with experience in Occupational Health & Safety at our Chalk River Facility (CRL) in Chalk river Ontario. More specifically, we are seeking an individual to fill a Health & Safety Specialist position.

 

·         Identifies problem areas from participation in workplace inspections and accident investigations, and makes recommendations for improvement to line management.

 

·         Works with line supervision and employees to identify inadequate safety practices, procedures or conditions so that proactive corrective action can be taken.

 

·         Under the guidance of OH&S Program Management, develops and maintains occupational safety programs, policies and procedures, guidelines and training materials.

 

·         Develops and delivers effective and efficient safety training either directly to employees, or to line supervision so that they can instruct their own employees.

 

·         Assists line management with incident investigations that identify root causes, and provides appropriate recommendations to prevent recurrence.

 

·         Maintains a working knowledge of all current federal and provincial legislation that affects occupational health and safety within AECL.

 

·         Maintains a working knowledge of currently available personal protective equipment and clothing, as well as other safety related equipment.

 

·         Knowledge and experience with ergonomic assessment an asset.

 

·         Takes on special projects as assigned by the OH&S Program Manager.

 

Qualifications

 

·         A Post-secondary education in a related field of study, and a minimum of 3 to 5 years relevant technical/operational experience.

 

·         Experience in a unionized environment is an asset.

 

·         Has, or is willing and able to acquire Canadian Registered Safety Professional (CRSP) designation.

 

·         Strong interpersonal, communication skills, tact, diplomacy and an ability to sell your ideas is essential.  Demonstrated ability to develop and deliver group presentations and training courses.

 

·         Good document writing, editing and computer skills (Word, Excel, Power-point, Outlook, Visio).

 

·         Basic Industrial Hygiene knowledge in areas such as hazardous chemicals/WHMIS, noise, heat stress, confined space entry, and personal protective clothing and equipment (PPE&C).  Radiation protection knowledge is beneficial but not essential.

 

·         Willing and able to wear a respirator and other PPE&C, climb ladders and enter confined spaces as required.

 

·         Working knowledge of the hazards presented by industrial work environments including process systems and components, machine tools and heavy equipment.

 

·         Must be a mature, organized self-starter with a demonstrated ability to work as an effective team member in establishing priorities, and achieving goals and objectives when faced with varied and conflicting demands.

·         Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, with managers, supervisors, employees, regulatory agencies and peers external to AECL on all aspects of occupational health and safety program development, implementation and maintenance while maintaining credibility with all customers and stakeholders.
