Duties

Perform the following security activities on various rotating shift assignments, in accordance with oral and written instructions, company and site-specific policies and procedures and applicable legislation.

Provide conventional security response capabilities to breaches of security, emergencies and /or contingency operations, on or in relation to AECL properties.  

 

·         Contain, apprehend, arrest, search and /or neutralize intruders pending the arrival of the local/Provincial Police force, utilizing the correct application of the “Use of Force Continuum” in accordance with approved rules of engagement

·         Prepare and maintain records of security activities performed as per procedures.

·         Carry out normal and miscellaneous security investigations involving property, personnel, criminal or quasi criminal acts, damage claims.

·         May be required to carry and effectively employ, a variety of non-lethal and lethal weapon systems, day and night surveillance systems, as well as standard and tactical communications systems.

·         Perform regular security activities such as motor vehicle and foot patrols, gate duty, personnel and vehicle searches, etc. wearing ballistic vests, equipment belts, and portable radios to enforce trespassing and regulations, and to check on security facility housekeeping,  anti-intrusion and other property protection equipment conditions.

·         Operate, as required, a motor vehicle equipped with appropriate firearms and communication equipment.

·         Perform and train in frequent intermittent periods of moderate to heavy physical activity involving the use of assigned security equipment.

·         Work with internal and external contacts on a regular basis such as the radiation control group, notifying appropriate personnel for the purpose of responding to trouble calls, alarms, fire reports etc and responding to requests for local police, assisting the police in accident investigations on and off site.

·         During drills and/or emergency situations, execute designated duties regarding information collection and communication, access control and/or evacuation of the site and adjacent areas in accordance with site contingency plans and procedures.

·         Provide appropriate information and assistance to off-site response forces in the event of armed intruders.

·         Operate and maintain equipment and supplies associated with duties.

·         Carry out basic maintenance in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions.

·         Participate in regular physical fitness training and exercises, drills and testing under the guidance of designated personnel or on their own to maintain minimum acceptable standards.

·         Re-qualify on all equipment, procedures, and physical standards to ensure an appropriate “Fit for Duty” status.

·         Provide security input at site orientation sessions with on-site personnel on their role in maintaining general security of the facility with specific references to CNSC access requirements, local security regulations and parking information.

·         May be required to operate and monitor closed circuit television units and intrusion equipment.

·         Dispatch patrol personnel for the purpose of investigating alarms.

·         Identify and/or record any unusual situations to the supervisor for direction.

·         Maintain a log of all SMR operations and activities.

·         Provide first aid, rescue and other response as required

·         Respond to alarms on-site and at remote locations.

·         As assigned, demonstrate security functions to new personnel.

 

Qualifications

 

·         Applicants must have successfully completed Secondary School or its equivalent.

·         Applicants must successfully pass a thorough medical and psychological examination

·         Applicants must successfully pass an annual physical fitness test as prescribed by the CNSC.

·         Applicants must have a valid provincial driver’s licence (Class G).

·         Applicants must have or be able to immediately obtain a valid restricted and prohibited Possession and Aquisition Licence (PAL).

·         Requires a knowledge and understanding of sociology, contemporary social problems, interpersonal and group dynamics, and excellent communication skills.  Requires knowledge of Canadian criminal justice, criminal and civil law and surveillance to carry out CNSC regulations and have an understanding of civil rights.  Requires knowledge of security techniques, procedures and standards and related statutes and acts.

·         Requires knowledge of communication and security systems.

·         Requires a basic understanding of business office procedures.

·         Requires a basic knowledge of computer fundamentals and principles of data processing.

 

Experience

 

·         Experience in a law enforcement, military, or security environment would be beneficial, including but not limited to; safe handling and tactical employment of various types of lethal and non-lethal weapons; day and night surveillance systems; restraint systems; the firearm permit process; and regulations regarding weapons discharges.

·         Requires experience in the security or equivalent function to be familiar with the routines and various governing policies, procedures, and regulations, surveillance and detection equipment.

·         Requires experience to be familiar with the applicable computerized information systems for the production of security reports.

·         Requires experience to become familiar with nuclear safety/ corporate/divisional/ department policies and procedures, reporting structures, contracts and interrelationships between work groups.

·         Requires knowledge of radiation and personal protection equipment.  A period of two to three years is considered necessary to gain this experience.
