Research Assistant 1

Molecular Neuropsychiatry Section, Neuroscience




Position Description:

The Molecular Neuropsychiatry Section at the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health is seeking a full-time, contract Research Assistant 1 to join our team. The successful candidate will be primarily responsible for genetic sample management and processing in a busy lab environment. The successful candidate will work within scientific team, interacting with scientists, post-doctoral fellows and research analysts. You will require strong interpersonal and communication skills to work effectively and strategically. Responsibilities will include, but are not limited to, sample accessioning, DNA QC, quantification and dilutions, assistance with NGS library preparation. You will support a healthy workplace that embraces diversity, encourages teamwork and complies with all applicable regulatory and legislative requirements. This position is located at 250 College Street.



The successful candidate must possess a minimum of secondary school education and/or special courses. Previous experience working or volunteering in a health services or academic setting, and particularly experience with basic molecular biology techniques such as DNA quantification, PCR, gel electrophoresis, would be an asset. Candidate should be able to locate, arrange and process large number of samples in an efficient and organized manner while maintaining detailed lab book and computer records. The successful candidate will have demonstrated ability to diligently follow guidelines and the ability to produce high quality and accurate work while meeting task deadlines and requirements. Excellent communication skills (oral/written), proven ability to maintain lab records and the ability to work effectively in a dynamic research team environment with minimal supervision are essential. You will possess the ability for self-directed learning/working, as well as collaboration and teamwork.



Please Note:        This full-time, contract position lasting four (4) months is part of the OPSEU Bargaining Unit


Salary Range:      $19.82 – $24.44

Must Have Skills
  • Experience with basic molecular biology techniques such as DNA quantification, PCR, gel electrophoresis
  • Next generation sequence library preparation using Thruplex, on the Illumina HiSeq platform
  • Screening for autism spectrum disorder variants in whole exome sequence data.
