Demonstrates proficiency in administering the fundamentals of the nursing process, contributes to the nursing assessment and the development of the nursing care plan, and participates in the evaluation of nursing care within the assigned specialty area. Shares responsibility with other health care disciplines. Reports to Department Director/Assistant Director.
- Ensures optimal patient care utilizing the nursing process.
- Maintains patient records and documents to ensure an accurate record of the patient’s medical and nursing care.
- Administers and controls narcotics, medications and IV therapies in accordance with the Registered Nurse, Nurse Practice Act.
- Assesses and plans patient/family education and discharge needs.
- Recognizes and responds to emergency situations appropriately.
- All Obstetrical RN’s will attain the skills required to be an effective charge nurse. This includes attending any required training specific to the charge nurse role, ability to delegate, problem solve, observe the entire unit functions and relay concerns to the appropriate authority.
- Promotes an environment conducive to professional practice by functioning as a role model and resource person for other patient services team members.
- Practices competencies in nursing skills based upon current scientific/evidence-based knowledge. The Obstetrical RN is required to obtain proficiency in both obstetric and level II neonatal care.
SPECIALIZED KNOW-HOW & REQUIREMENTS:
- Current Illinois Registered Nurse Licensure required. Bachelor’s degree preferred.
- Adheres to the closed unit agreement, requiring extra on call and call-in shifts.
- OB certification must be obtained within 3 years after hire, must have a minimum of 24 months of OB experience prior to obtaining a certification.
- In-depth working knowledge of current concepts, principles and procedures used in Obstetrical and Neonatal care. This includes annual OB competency review, annual fetal monitor competency, bi-annual NRP certification, annual skills labs and ad hoc skills labs provided by the Perinatal Center, quarterly multi-disciplinary simulations/emergency drills, attendance of at least 1 fetal strip review-multidisciplinary meeting, annual breastfeeding support education, completion of the 24 Growing Up with Us/Growing Families Education modules annually, and annual education/competency in required TJC, IPT, and ILPQC initiatives and projects.
- Demonstrates ability to document patient needs and assessments.
- Basic Computer knowledge required.
- Thorough knowledge of medical equipment and instruments required.
- Demonstrates the knowledge necessary to provide care appropriate to any age-related needs of the patients served on the unit. Demonstrates knowledge of the principles of growth and development appropriate to the patient population served. Able to assess and interpret data about the patient’s status in order to identify each patient’s needs and provide the appropriate care, including age-related care, needed by the neonate, adolescent, and adult patient group.
