Position: Mental Health Professional - Crisis Response Team

Department: Mental Health - Crisis Response Team

Status: Part-time, 0.2 FTE

Hours: Days, Evenings (until 2:00 a.m.) and Weekends

Site: Oakville

Responsibilities:

Provides assessment and treatment plan recommendations, in consultation with the ER physicians and the on-call psychiatrist, for patients (adults, children and adolescents) triaged in ER who present with symptoms of mental illness. In consultation with the psychiatrist on-call will determine the most appropriate treatment, plan, interventions and disposition of the mental health patient presenting in ER. In consultation with the on-call psychiatrist, act as a communication liaison between the patient, the referring source, the ER physician and the on-call physician to determine the level of urgency of the patient's crisis and the final disposition of the patient. Acts as a liaison to arrange follow up and disposition of patients deemed suitable for discharge from ER but requiring external linkages and referrals. Facilitates admissions to the two inpatient psychiatric units and to the Adult Day Program. Provides appropriate communication linkages to referring sources including GP, psychiatrists, community treatment organizations, and the inpatient units regarding mental health patients who enter the system via the ER department. May be asked to provide nursing consultation to the other inpatient units regarding patients with mental health issues.

Qualifications:

Halton Healthcare Services is seeking individuals who are competent in their chosen profession; patient/customer focused; team players; effective communicators; caring and respectful and are fiscally responsible.

    • Regulated Health Professional (i.e: RN, MSW, OT)
    • Must be registered with the appropriate college
    • C.N.A. certification in psychiatry preferred, if not willingness to obtain in 1-2 years.
    • 1 - 2 years of recent experience functioning in a crisis role in a general hospital or specialized psychiatric facility.
    • Excellent knowledge of Mental Health Legislation.
    • Previous 2-5 years general mental health nursing experience.
    • Excellent knowledge of community agencies and referral resources.
    • Community experience in Mental Health considered an asset.
    • Excellent knowledge of the de-escalation theory and technique.
    • Keen awareness of cultural sensitivities.
    • Must be able to meet the physical demands of this position

Salary: Will be determined as to which professional designation is hired.
