The Cardiology Research group at St. Michael's Hospital is currently looking for a Research Technician. The Research Technician will be responsible for the daily care of research animals, conduction of animal experiments, collection of research samples, and the organization of research data.

Duties and Responsibilities: 

  • Performing intraperitoneal, intravenous, intramuscular, and subcutaneous injections as well as oral dosing on mouse and rat
  • Collecting biological specimens such as blood, urine and tissue
  • Tissue processing and paraffin embedding
  • Schedule and ensure completion of work assigned 
  • Assess health status and perform detailed clinical observations of animals 
  • Monitor animal care procedures in order to ensure implementation 
  • Management of mouse breeding colonies
  • Basic data entry into Excel or computerized systems

Qualifications:

  • Diploma in an Animal Health Technology Program (CALAS/ACSAL approved), or Veterinary Technician Program from an accredited post-secondary institution required.
  • Minimum 3 years of experience within a laboratory setting working with animals (mice and rats)
  • A high level of technical skill, organization and initiative 
  • Progressive experience in a research environment with hands-on experience across a range of animal species, particularly rodents 
  • A working knowledge of animal related standards and CCAC guidelines is required 
  • Must have the ability to follow established policies, guidelines, procedures and objectives  
  • Excellent record keeping and attention to detail are essential 
  • Strong interpersonal skills, excellent communication skills and the ability to interact positively with other team members in a dynamic environment, as well as having compassion and sensitivity for animals
