The Nurse Practitioner - Adult (NP), Medical/Surgical Psychiatric Consultation Service contributes to the quality of patient care through the component roles of advanced practitioner, educator, and researcher. The emphasis on particular components of the role may change over time in response to the evolving priorities of the service. It is anticipated that approximately 75% of the NP's time will be devoted to psychiatric consultation and treatment activities, and 25% of time will be dedicated to education and  research,.  The NP's practice integrates the skills and knowledge from nursing and adult mental health within a broad framework of advanced nursing practice.  The NP's practice should be viewed as a balance between collaborative and independent practice.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • The NP provides advanced nursing practice through physical and psychiatric assessments, consultation and, development of comprehensive care plans, and assisting with the evaluation of patient outcomes.
  • Works collaboratively with the Medical/Surgical Psychiatric Consultation Service and members of the health care team on  inpatient medical and surgical services.
  • Provides leadership in educational programs whose focus is specialized knowledge and skills related to the treatment of patients with co morbid medical/surgical and psychiatric illnesses.
  • Maintains leading edge nursing knowledge base through clinical research and literature analysis; contributes to nursing knowledge base through participation in research, presentation/publications, and incorporates research to practice.
  • Monitors Clinical Guidelines, educates staff regarding Clinical Guidelines and acts as a resource for related issues and problem solving. Recommends Clinical Guidelines revisions as indicated.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • The Nurse Practitioner (NP) requires a Masters degree in Nursing with a clinical focus in adult mental health.
  • Must be registered in the Extended Class with the Ontario College of Nurses.
  • Proven advanced clinical knowledge in adult mental health and primary care and implementation of evidenced based practice.
  • Demonstrated competencies to autonomously diagnose, order and interpret diagnostic tests, prescribe pharmaceuticals and perform procedures within the RN (EC) legislated scope of practice and designated medical directives, as appropriate.
  • Demonstrated commitment to the vision, goals, mission and values of St. Michael's Hospital.
  • Demonstrated superior interpersonal, coaching and clinical leadership skills.
  • Proven success in providing inspirational leadership in a team environment and ability to encourage innovation and creativity amongst team members.
  • Demonstrated ability to be self directed, work independently and as a member of the interdisciplinary team and ability to achieve outcomes.
  • Strong analytical thinking and proactive problem solving and conceptional skills.
  • Demonstrated excellent organizational and communication skills.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and skill in critical thinking and decision-making.
  • Demonstrated advanced computer skills required (database management and word processing) an asset.
  • Demonstrated excellent attendance record.
