With a staff of over 300 members, the Environmental Services Department supports all areas of St. Michael's Hospital, including several off-site locations, through the timely provision of housekeeping services, patient transportation, waste management, and other ad hoc project activities. The Manager, Environmental Services, reports to the Director of Environmental Services with the responsibility for working with programs, departments, and services, clinical and senior professionals within St. Michael's Hospital to maintain hospital cleanliness, manage waste and facilitate effective patient flow. The Manager's key responsibilities include: - Recruiting, training, and developing a team of eight supervisors
- Managing performance of supervisors and front line staff
- Developing and maintaining effective working relationships with the clinical units, human resources, corporate health and safety, and other support services departments
- Continually striving for improved patient satisfaction and quality scores through the development and implementation of staff training and education
- Forwarding the Hospital's Corporate Greening Strategy through the implementation of waste reduction and recycling programs
- Implementing quality improvement initiatives in conjunction with clinical partners to ensure standards of cleanliness are exceeded
- Encouraging, recognizing and rewarding good performance to develop a strong sense of pride in the work of the department
- Supporting corporate projects and initiatives through the provision of environmental services input, expertise and leadership
- Ensuring the day to day practices and operations meet the terms of our Collective Agreement
- Preparing work schedules that meet user needs while staying within budget
- Participating on a variety of Hospital committees including, but not limited to, Joint Occupational Health and Safety, Patient Flow, and Infection Control
- Fostering teamwork within the department by organizing staff recognition initiatives and events
- Ensuring that safe working conditions are provided for all staff members
QUALIFICATIONS: - Minimum of seven years recent management experience with at least four years in a supervisory/management role in a unionized environment
- Post-secondary degree or diploma from a recognized institute
- Completion of OHA certificate in Environmental Supervision Level 1 and 2 preferred
- Previous experience working in a hospital or healthcare setting
- Knowledge of waste management, environmental sanitation and infection control practices
- Excellent interpersonal, communication, staff development and team building skills
- Demonstrated ability to coach staff and facilitate change
- Ability to work with a wide variety of stakeholders with a customer service focus
- Demonstrated organizational and time management skills, including prior experience in project management
- Training and/or experience using quality improvement methods and tools an asset
