Position Summary:

Reporting to the Patient Care Manager, the Registered Practical Nurse (RPN) is a professional caregiver who is responsible and accountable for providing assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of patient care within a total patient care delivery model in accordance with the standards of practice and competencies of the College of Nurses of Ontario, the Regulated Health Professions Act, The Scarborough Hospital (TSH) and the Canadian Triage Acuity Scale (CTAS) guidelines.

The RPN will be part a busy department providing service across the spectrum of all emergencies including: a high patient population for paediatrics, cardiology, obstetrics/gynecology, moderate trauma, oncology, dialysis, medicine and psychiatry. The RPN will practice independently within his/her scope of practice

In this role, the RPN will engage in ethical conduct and will provide high quality nursing care to patients and their families, based on the philosophy and conceptual framework of Nursing Practice at TSH. The RPN will strive to understand and appreciate the diversity of our patient population and workforce.

Required Qualifications:

  • Current registration in good standing with the College of Nurses of Ontario as a Registered Practical Nurse
  • Current BCLS certificate
  • Successful completion of a recognized Medication Administration Course
  • At least 2 years of experience as an RPN in a Medical/Surgical unit
  • Recent experience with initiating intravenous access and obtaining blood specimens via venipuncture
  • Successful completion of online Emergency Nursing Association (ENA) orientation course within 3 months of hire
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Demonstrates excellent patient assessment and teaching skills
  • Demonstrates excellent problem-solving, decision making and critical thinking skills
  • Demonstrates excellent organizational, time-management skills and team building skills
  • Demonstrates initiative and the ability to function both independently and as a multidisciplinary team member in a fast paced demanding environment
  • Demonstrates values consistent with TSH’s Code of Conduct and is committed to fostering a healthy and positive work environment in accordance with Health & Safety policy and legislation.
  • Utilize protective equipment provided and identify and reports hazards
  • Engages in ethical conduct and strives to understand and appreciate the diversity of our patient/staff population and community
  • Excellent work performance and attendance record

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Graduate of an RPN diploma program
  • Experience in an Emergency Department setting
  • Completed Patient Assessment course
  • Completed Intravenous Workshop
  • Completed venipuncture Workshop
  • Completed 12-lead ECG Workshop
  • Computer literacy and familiarity with electronic documentation
  • Willingness to participate in continuing education and unit based initiatives
  • Ability to speak another language
