As an integral member of the Allied Health team at Toronto General Hospital, the PHYSIOTHERAPY ASSISTANT supports the physiotherapy profession by taking responsibility for clinical and administrative duties. The Physiotherapy Assistant supports the therapist working in transplant areas on weekends under delegation from the weekday transplant physiotherapists. On the weekend they are reporting to the Physiotherapist working the Regular weekend list. The physiotherapist assistant sees a high volume of patients assisting the patient to perform exercises, transferring safely up to chair and ambulating complex patients either as singles or doubles with the help of other staff. The assistant ensures that supervising patients perform prescribed activities in an appropriate and safe manner. These responsibilities will aid the patients to improve function to progress towards discharge home and help to ensure quality patient care.


  • Completion of a recognized Community College Physiotherapy Assistant diploma program
  • At least (1) one year of relevant experience; Surgical or Transplant experience an asset
  • Computer skills using Microsoft Office
  • Demonstrates a clear understanding of rehabilitation principles
  • Demonstrates appropriate and effective written, oral and non-verbal communication with patients, families, colleagues and the public
  • Knowledge of the equipment and materials used in the provision of PT treatments
  • Excellent interpersonal, organizational and time management skills
  • Ability to function within an interdisciplinary team
  • Ability to solve problems and seek guidance of supervising staff when appropriate
  • Ability to deal effectively with difficult clients and conflicting situations
  • Ability to use good judgment in assessing difficult situations
  • Ability to be anticipate client's unique needs
  • Ability to be consistent and display a positive/helpful attitude
  • Ability to work in a self- directed manner
  • Ability to function in a stressful environment while maintaining professional demeanor
  • Must be able to perform the physical demands of the job
  • Acute care hospital experience preferred
