The Adult Genetics Program at the University Health Network helps to meet the needs of individuals who have been diagnosed with an inherited condition or those who may be at risk for an inherited condition.    The program includes both clinical and metabolic services.  Our team of professionals includes medical geneticists, genetic counsellors, dieticians, and other health care professionals. Together the team provides family risk assessment, diagnosis, management, education and support.The Adult Genetics Program is currently seeking a permanent full-time Genetic Counsellor.  The Genetic Counsellor will be responsible for providing care in our general genetics, which includes referrals from specialties such as neurology, nephrology, rheumatology, cardiology, and endocrinology.

The principal responsibilities include:

  • Assessing the unique medical/genetic and psychosocial needs of individual cases for the purpose of providing appropriate counselling, education, testing options, and follow-up. 
  • Providing clinical teaching to genetic counselling students, medical students, and professional colleagues.
  • Performing administrative responsibilities to ensure the effective management of individual cases, acting as an advocate for patients, performing cross-functional duties, as assigned or requested.
  • Performing other duties consistent with the job classification, as required.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Masters degree in Genetic Counselling
  • Canadian or ABGC certified or eligible
  • Previous work experience preferred
  • Ability to communicate effectively with patients and professionals
  • Ability to work independently as well as with a multidisciplinary team
  • Excellent time management and organizational skills
  • Excellent computer skills
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to adapt to a wide variety of patient populations and needs
  • Broad-based knowledge and versatility
