Hours:  Various rotating shifts (Scheduling will be determined based on unit needs and may include day/evening/night and weekend shifts)

The PT Extern role is a transitional role where PT students can gain clinical experience, specialty knowledge and self-confidence, as well as build on collaboration and communication skills. 

PT Externs are unregulated health care providers and function to enhance team dynamics and contribute to overall patient care.

Position Profile:

  • Practice in a team based model of care to provide support to the patient care teams, by assisting with basic clinical tasks under the supervision of a registered PT
  • Assists the Care Team with:
    • Turning and Repositioning
    • Transfers using Lifts and other transfer devices - (as 2nd person and if directly supervised by unit PT)
    • Setting up equipment for Activities of daily living (i.e. linen, washing materials)
    • Transportation to the therapy gym
  • Answer call bells, addressing patient concerns where appropriate and advising OT/PT/nursing staff when assistance is required
  • Support group exercise program supervision (i.e. Cardiac rehab program, COPD program)
  • Support individual exercise program (i.e. WorkFit)
  • Assist with modalities as delegated
  • Wiping down of surfaces or touched therapeutic materials

Candidate Profile:

  • MScOT/MScPT  in 2nd year of study Completed recent clinical placement at Halton Healthcare preferred
  • Demonstrated ability to complete patient care tasks as directed
  • Demonstrated ability to multi-task with proven organizational skills
  • Excellent communication, problem solving and interpersonal skills
  • Demonstrated confidence in knowledge, skills, judgement and ability to function in the team based model of care
