JOB SUMMARY:
The Staff Registered Nurse is a professional care giver who assumes responsibility and accountability of coordinating and implementing the care  for a group of patients for a designated time frame; care is provided through use of self, the nursing process, environment instrumentation and other health care team members.


QUALIFICATIONS:

Education:

Graduate of accredited school of nursing.  Current Registered Nurse licensure in the State of Illinois.

Training:
Employee with necessary education will be expected to exhibit reasonable proficiency within six months.

Experience:
None.


Job Knowledge:
   

  • Knowledge of the nursing process for the area to which they are assigned. 
  • Knowledge of hospital and unit policies and procedures, techniques, equipment, and legal parameters. 
  • Maintains CPR certification. 
  • Has knowledge of safety and infection control protocols for patients, visitors, staff, and self.
  • Is able to care for all age patients at a competency level of 100%.
  • Attends inservices education programs and unit meetings as described in the unit manual. 
  • Must be proficient in computerized documentation.
  • Must be able to function as the primary care giver or team leader with appropriate training.  
      

PERFORMANCE REQUIREMENTS:

Responsibility For:
Performing nursing process-assess, plan, implement, evaluate.  Coordinate and supervise components of care delegated to others in patient care; decision maker; education of patients/family; technical skills; and safety. Review and individualize the patient’s plan of care. In-service education and unit meeting attendance as described in manual of unit. Must  be proficient in computerized documentation. Responsible for
promoting the safety of self, staff, patients and visitors.  Utilizes the built in safeguards for patient safety that are available( med verify, two identifiers etc) Completes all annual competencies and in-service training.  Performs all other duties as assigned by the charge nurse or nurse director in  a timely manner.  Must attend “Handle with Care” training annually.  Must attend Service Excellence training annually.

Physical Demands:
Safely lifts weight over 50 pounds, as with moving and lifting patients and equipment;  prolonged walking and standing (as with working 12-hour shifts), visual and auditory acuity; manual dexterity. Utilizes lifting aids when appropriate.

Special Demands:
Ability to work cooperatively and independently, to work efficiently under stress. Plans workload for the shift.  Works well with other staff. Strives to Improve self.  Dresses appropriately for work.  Always wears name badge.  promotes  a positive public image of the nursing unit and Harrisburg Medical Center to patients, family members and other staff.
