Job Description – Nursing Assistant


JOB TITLE: Nursing Assistant

DEPARTMENT:  HMC Clinics  

IMMEDIATE SUPERVISOR:  Clinic Office Manager/Director Practice Administration

I. BRIEF SUMMARY:

Provide patient care to clinic patients under the supervision of the Physician, Nurse Practitioner, or Physician Assistant.

II. ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS, EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:

A. High School Education or GED required, Certified Nursing Assistant training or Registered Medical Assistant certification required.
B. Excellent interpersonal skills.
C. Must be competent to communicate with employees, patients, and visitors regardless of age.
D. Ability to work independently or as part of a team.
E. Proficient operation of computer and keyboard.
F. Understanding of medical terminology.
G. Previous medical clinic experience.


III. PRINCIPLE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:


A. Greet all patients in a courteous, compassionate and professional manner.
B. Interview and input patient data into the computer system either in person or via phone.  Obtain patient vital signs, medical history, family history, social history, active medications, etc. and input accurately into the Electronic Medical Record (E.H.R.) 
C. Provide instruments and supplies to assist the Provider with minor office procedures are directed.
D. Perform treatments as directed by the Provider as applicable.
E. Discharge patients to the receptionist at the conclusion of the patient visit ensuring all patient needs and questions have been answered.
F. Comply with established patient care standards.  Maintain established clinic policies, procedures, objectives, quality assurance, safety environmental and infection control practices. 
G. Maintain and ensure Hospital, Clinic, Joint Commission, Rural Health Clinic, National Health Services Corp, etc. regulatory compliance.
H. Follow established protocols and utilize supplies and equipment in a cost-effective manner with ongoing care and maintenance.  Assist with sterilization of instruments and exercise proper waste disposal as per guidelines.  
I. Maintain a general knowledge base of participating network coverage and restrictions.
J. Cooperate with other personnel to achieve department objectives and maintain good employee, interdepartmental and public relations. 
K. Maintain patient rights and confidentiality of patient information and abide by established communication code.
L. Perform pre-certifications and pre-authorizations for patient services as required.
M. Responsible for minor housekeeping duties. 
N. Provide flexibility in practice staffing arrangements. 
O. Receive and accurately convey messages via written, verbal and electronic communication.
P. Schedule patient appointments and maintain accuracy in scheduling miscellaneous provider appointments.
Q. Fax, scan and file documents as instructed in an efficient and accurate manner.
R. Participate in ongoing professional development activities.
S. Adhere to clinic and hospital policy standards to include Hospital, Clinic, Hospital Mission, Vision and Values Statement, Rural Health Clinic, National Health Service Corp, etc.
T. Maintain a clean, organized and professional work area free from unnecessary clutter.
U. Ability to work with a variety of healthcare professionals to provide for patient needs.
H. Other duties as assigned.


I. PHYSICAL DEMANDS:


A. Extended periods of computer keyboarding.
B. Moderate walking, standing, stooping, bending, lifting and repetitive motion.
C. Sitting for extended periods of time.
D. May be required to lift items up to 25-50 lbs.
E. Normal or corrected vision is essential for long periods of working with computer.
F. Must have good hearing.
G. Regular exposure to risk of blood borne pathogens and unpleasant elements.

J. MUST HAVE ABILITY TO KEEP CONFIDENTIAL INFORMATION CONFIDENTIAL.
K. Work assigned shifts/locations as needed.

III. SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

This position has no supervisory responsibilities.
