The RRT, CRT, RCP is a professional caregiver who is proficient in the assessment and treatment of acute care patients. He/she administers therapies, procedures, and life support to patients with deficiencies and abnormalities of the cardio-pulmonary system.



  • Graduate of an accredited college course designed to prepare candidates for certification and/or registry
  • Passed the certification and/or registry examination given by the National Board for Respiratory Therapy (NBRC)
  • Currently Licensed by the State of Illinois
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) Required
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) within one year of hire


  •  Licensed by the State of Illinois as a Respiratory Care Practitioner
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) Required
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) within one year of hire

Orientation lasting approximately three months depending on previous experience.

One year experience in an acute care setting is preferred, but not required.


Job Knowledge:

  • Candidates must know the basic principals of chemistry, physics, mathematics, physiologic chemistry (bio-chemistry), and microbiology.He/she must be able to apply that knowledge to the management and treatment of patients of all ages who suffer from pulmonary insufficiencies.
  • Candidates must be able to assess and interpret data, as well as demonstrate the knowledge and skill to recommend and provide appropriate age specific therapies needed for care.

  • Use of specific Oxygen devices and delivery systems

  • CPAP/BIPAP initiation and management
  • Electroencephalography (EEG)
  • Electrocardiogram (EKG)
  • Pulmonary Function testing
  • Scheduling and tracking OP procedures
  • Knowledge of hospital and department Policies and Procedures
  • Successful completion of CEU’s and all assigned competencies
  • All other assigned tasks

Physical Demands:
Moderate to heavy lifting (sometimes over 50lbs) includes patients and equipment, prolonged walking, standing, visual and auditory acuity, manual dexterity

Special Demands:
Candidates must be able to work and communicate well with others while under stress. Maintaining good composure and bedside manner is a must, in addition to tact, initiative, and good judgment skills. Must participate and become proficient in all matrix involved in the Process Improvement Board and Lean Daily Management, including documentation, interpretation, and demonstration. Promotes a good positive attitude and public image of the Respiratory Therapy Department, as well as Harrisburg Medical Center.
