Senior Communications Officer - Toronto, Ontario

Position: Senior Communications Officer
Site: MaRS Centre, Toronto

Reports To: Director, Communications
Salary: Commensurate with level of experience
Hours: 35 hours/week
Status: Full-time, Permanent

The Ontario Institute for Cancer Research is looking for a new Senior Communications Officer with experience working in research, health or life sciences communications to help expand OICR’s public profile and reach new audiences and communities in Ontario, across Canada and around the world.

We are looking for an excellent writer and creative storyteller, able to work with OICR’s community of researchers to identify OICR’s successes and translate complex scientific information into engaging and accessible materials for our audiences, both within and outside the research community. This individual must also be proactive and articulate in promoting these stories widely to new audiences, with experience in media relations, editorial and social media being requirements for the role.

Working under the Director of Communications, the individual will work together with the communications team on additional projects as needed, with experience in graphic design/visual communications, event planning, website content development and development of slide or pitch decks being assets but not requirements for this role.

The ideal individual should be a dynamic and skilled communicator, bring innovative and creative ideas to the team, like working collaboratively and be passionate about cancer research and its impact.



  • Source, write and edit stories for OICR News, the stakeholder newsletter (Portal) and the OICR Impact Report, using knowledge of editorial principles and standards;
  • Write and pitch editorial content to external sources to promote the Institute and our key messages;
  • Write news releases, backgrounders and other materials for major announcements;
  • Pitch scientific news and other OICR announcements to mainstream and trade media;
  • Write and edit material such as letters, website pages, speeches, reports;
  • Develop and manage key contacts and relationships with researchers across the Institute to ensure exposure for all research groups (both at MaRS and across Ontario);
  • Champion new ideas, advocate for new types of stories both on OICR News and externally;
  • Help with building understanding of OICR’s impact and strategy, including development of pitch decks, one pagers and website materials;
  • Work with OICR’s commercialization partner FACIT to develop joint OICR/FACIT communications materials focused on OICR’s economic impact and contributions to Ontario’s innovation sector;
  • Act as community builder, acting persuasively to bring people together, including senior scientific leadership, to meet OICR’s strategic collaborative research goals and to embed OICR communications throughout the Institute;
  • Work with OICR’s Patient and Families Advisory Council to integrate the patient voice into OICR communications;
  • Act as OICR’s corporate liaison for the Rising Stars student network, overseeing training activities including speaker series, skill-building series, conference meetups and workshops;
  • Plan, implement, monitor and report outreach and knowledge exchange projects and initiatives including student tours and school visits; and
  • Organize and run news conferences and other media events, working with senior leaders, researchers, invited guests and government officials.


  • Make updates to OICR websites, as needed;
  • Develop infographics and website material;
  • Provide communications support in the planning and execution of internal and external OICR events;
  • Create and post content for social media (LinkedIn, Twitter, Instagram, YouTube);
  • Contribute to team projects, providing strategic communications expertise for internal and external communications;
  • Work with members of other internal corporate groups, such as Research Operations and Strategy and Planning to help ensure alignment of messaging and strategic goals; and
  • Provide other communications support for communications team, scientific leadership and executive team as needed.


  • Bachelor’s degree in science, communications, journalism or related field or recognized equivalent required
  • 5+ years of communications experience in science, technology, innovation or academic sectors
  • Proven ability to effectively communicate science to different audiences, including researchers, patients and the public
  • Postgraduate degree in the sciences an asset
  • Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Office, including Outlook, Word and PowerPoint;
  • Working knowledge of Adobe Creative Cloud an asset
  • Familiarity with Wordpress, HootSuite and MailChimp, or equivalent services
