POSITION:

de Souza Institute is hiring an Advanced Practice Nurse Educator for a one year full time contract position to replace a maternity leave. Located at the University Health Network, the institute provides evidence-based continuing education curriculum for clinicians working in oncology and palliative care settings across Canada. Since 2008, de Souza Institute has delivered, through its online platform, high quality oncology education to more than 15,000 health care professionals.  The de Souza model of education is published and being applied across the country through partnerships with regional / provincial cancer agencies and national professional associations.

ACCOUNTABILITIES:

Working with the Institute’s education and information technology teams, and in conjunction with the Institute’s strategic plan, the Educator will lead the development and implementation of oncology education programs for health care professional across Canada, with clinical foci of oncology (especially on chemotherapy and biotherapy), and palliative care.  This will be achieved through collaborating with all levels of the interdisciplinary teams and organizations, implementing and evaluating processes to enhance knowledge, skills and attitudes of health care professionals throughout Canada. The Educator competencies focus on education and staff development, collaboration, scholarly/research activity, and leadership/change management.

The principal responsibilities include: utilizing principles of adult education to develop/design, plan, and deliver/provide educational programs/activities which facilitates the development of oncology and palliative care specialized clinicians; encouraging, promoting and facilitating continuous learning for the health care team and to ensure constant improvement in the quality of oncology and palliative care services; performing corporate and consultation responsibilities; performing research responsibilities; and performing cross-functional and/or other duties consistent with the job classification, as assigned or requested.
 
QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Current Registration as a Registered Nurse with the College of Nurses of Ontario
  • A Master’s Degree in Nursing or Education or recognized equivalent preferred
  • Minimum five (5) years experience in oncology nursing required with experience in palliative care an asset
  • Minimum three (3) years experience in chemotherapy and biotherapy administration and care required
  • Current CNA Oncology Certification required
  • Theoretical and practical experience in adult education including educational program planning, development and evaluation required
  • Familiarity with de Souza online education courses, especially the Provincial Standardized Chemotherapy and
  • Biotherapy course an asset
  • Experiences of using learning management systems an asset
  • Excellent presentation, program planning and teaching skills
  • Excellent professional nursing knowledge and skills
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills
  • Ability to work effectively with key stakeholders in policy, acute care and community care to develop and
  • implement innovative programming to support professional development of health care providers  and quality
  • improvement in oncology and palliative care
  • Proficiency in the use of computer applications to support work processes, eLearning  implementation and information management
