Reports to: Perfusion Manager     
Hours: 20 hours per week     weekends only
Status: Permanent Part-time


UHN’s Perfusion Services supports Toronto’s biggest and busiest suite of ORs, conducting 1750 cardiac surgeries each year. The Perfusion Department is also actively involved in the Transplant (Heart, Lungs & Liver), Organ Regeneration, ECLS and Ventricular Assist Device Programs. Our suite of ORs incorporates state-of-the-art-technology to assist the surgical teams in handling the most complex cases. Perfusionists work in an environment where creativity and innovative case management are encouraged.As a Cardiovascular Perfusionist at Toronto General Hospital, you will be able to use a variety of skills on a regular basis, not just once or twice a year, within an environment that encompasses:

  • The largest Lung Transplant program in North America and the developers of the Ex-Vivo Lung recondition program
  • The largest Canadian Adult ECMO program, using both diffusion oxygenators and the Novalung; Perfusion is a vital part of the ECMO program, attending and influencing daily rounds and improving patient outcomes
  • Implanting a variety of ventricular assist devices, including Heart-Mate II and Heartware
  • A busy adult congenital program, proving experience in challenging and innovative surgery
  • Opportunity to participate in original research, write papers and present at Regional, National and International conferences
  • Educational support that allows for annual attendance at a wide variety of conferences
  • Opportunities to be actively involved in Cardiac Surgery Resident training as well as Perfusion student training

  • At minimum, completion of a Bachelors of Science degree with a diploma in Cardiovascular Perfusion
  • Certification (or eligibility of certification) with the Canadian Society of Clinical Perfusion (CSCP)/or American Board of Clinical Perfusion (ABCP)
  • Minimum 3 years experience 
  • Demonstrated interest in continuing education 
  • Thorough knowledge of the theory and practice procedures, instruments, equipment and special techniques 
  • Specialized knowledge of extracorporeal physiology and mechanics (both adult and pediatric) required
  • Knowledge of applicable Hospital and departmental policies, procedures, guidelines, protocols and practices
  • Excellent problem recognition and problem solving-skills
  • Effective time management skills with the ability to organize work and set priorities for self and others 
  • Highly developed expertise and effective communication with all other health team members are essential in making the frequent, critical decisions required during the course of a bypass or other related perfusion procedures 
  • Ability to work effectively, adapt and work accurately under stressful conditions
  • Ability to work effectively in a team environment 
  • Ability to work effectively and efficiently in a fast paced environment
  • Sound judgment 
  • Computer literacy
