This is an exciting opportunity to join UHN as Director, Corporate Legal.

Position Summary: 
The Director, Corporate Legal will support the Vice President & Chief Legal Officer (CLO) in developing, enhancing and maintaining the organization’s corporate legal services, governance frameworks and strategies, and work collaboratively with the Director, Research Legal in developing and enhancing start-up and business creation, and assist in developing the strategic direction for legal services. The Director, Corporate Legal is responsible for ensuring the organization’s business and contractual arrangements are sound, feasible and consistent with the organization’s policies and law.

The Director, Corporate Legal will primarily work with clients in the departments of finance, digital, facilities and redevelopment, and business development, including support for international opportunities. Together with the Director, Compliance, the Director, Corporate Legal is responsible for ensuring that relevant legal and regulatory issues are understood and that legal, risk and governance frameworks are integrated into the decision making practices and policies of the organization. The Director, Corporate Legal, working with the CLO, contributes to the development and implementation of the organization’s strategic plan, ensuring all policies, programs and initiatives are consistent and supportive of the organization’s mission, vision and values, and acting as a role model through strong relationships and visibility, and through effective internal and external communications.

The Director, Corporate Legal collaborates with the CLO in the development, implementation and ongoing maintenance of an organization-wide strategy and framework for legal services.  The Director, Corporate Legal will have direct oversight and management of the lawyers and professionals supporting UHN’s corporate legal function.  The Director, Corporate Legal ensures the development and communication of strategies, policies and procedures to manage risk throughout the organization. Additionally, the Director, Corporate Legal will support the CLO in overseeing the governance framework for the organization while keeping abreast of current philosophy, legal matters and precedent setting cases to ensure internal organizational practices are appropriate, meet standards or can be adapted to better meet the organization’s plans. The Director, Corporate Legal will perform corporate management responsibilities that support and advance UHN’s goals.

• Bachelor’s degree in Law or equivalent
• Should be a member in good standing of the Law Society of Upper Canada
• Proven senior leadership and management skills with demonstrated ability to inspire and motivate
   others and create an environment conducive to team building

• Demonstrated senior leadership capability
• Exemplary communication skills, both verbal and written
• Demonstrated behaviours supporting values of innovation, integrity, collaboration and excellence
• Demonstrated ability to inspire trust, interact positively and work cooperatively with colleagues,
   staff and effectively as part of a team required

• Proven collaborative planning skills in a fast-paced environment required
• Ability to determine strategic direction and independently adjust priorities, as needed, required
• Ability to lead, function independently and collaboratively with interdisciplinary teams
• Knowledge of applicable legislation
• Excellent customer service and interpersonal skills required
• Excellent organizational and time management skills required
• Excellent conceptual thinking, analytical, problem-solving and decision-making skills required

• 8+ years of relevant work experience gained in either an in-house environment or private practice
• Significant experience in a senior management role in a health care system an asset
• Strategic experience in fiscal management, the ability to use resources wisely and business
   understanding to make decisions on resource allocations

• Demonstrated ability to foster innovation and progressive change
• Accomplished in leading, mentoring, and motivating colleagues and staff
• Experience in developing and sustaining effective and collaborative professional working relationships
   and partnerships

• Experience in a multi-site health care setting an asset
