The Artificial Intelligence and Rehabilitation Robotics Laboratory, KITE – Toronto Rehabilitation Institute, invites application for a 1-year Postdoctoral Fellowship to begin as soon as possible. This multi-disciplinary and multi-institution project (UHN, U. of Toronto, U. of Waterloo) is funded by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council.

The aim of the project is to develop a greater understanding of the challenges related to smart home technology under the contemporary lens of theory of surveillance. The postdoctoral researcher is expected to complete a systematic literature review of existing smart home technology systems, with a specific focus on studies involving the social benefits, ethical implications, and datafication challenges. The candidate will also conduct surveys and interviews to learn about peoples’ understanding of domestic surveillance technologies, privacy, data security, data ownership and data access.

The applicant is expected to have received a PhD within the past 5 years and has demonstrated interest or experience in digital surveillance, smart home technology, ethics, and social science research. The successful candidate must have experience in conducting and publishing literature reviews, including systematic reviews; should have knowledge in applying PRISMA and quality appraisal of evidence, mixed-methods research, data management, and statistical analysis, and have the ability to work collaboratively with an interdisciplinary and multi-site investigator team; qualitative interview experience and data analysis experience, including the use of NVivo software, are required. Familiarity with privacy and surveillance issues and theories are considered an asset. The selected candidate will be responsible for research ethics board submission. The candidate must have obtained the PhD in the relevant field (social science, health research, nursing, psychology, rehabilitation sciences, etc.) not more than five years from the time of hiring.

Due to the ongoing COVID-19 situation, the selected person will work from home. After normal working conditions are restored, this position will be based in site.
