Hours:             37.5 Hours per week
Status:            Permanent Full Time

Under the direction of the Manager, Communications, the Public Affairs Associate, provides communications support for communications activities undertaken by Public Affairs at the Toronto Western Hospital at University Health Network with a specific focus on internal communications and on-site support for events, media, and social media working with the Manager – Communications.

The principal responsibilities include: acting as writer and editor of internal materials such as newsletter, ensuring division programs and people are regularly covered in the newsletter; understanding the culture at the Hospital, issues or concerns of staff and communicate these to the Manager, Communications; performing media relations activities; organizing media conferences for programs, when and where appropriate; organizing and executing special events; integrating and executing digital and social media communication programs; performing cross-functional duties, as assigned or requested; performing other duties consistent with the job classification, as required.


  • Provides communications expertise/support for external/internal communications and corporate objectives.
  • Acts as a communications consultant and provides expertise to the Hospital.
  • Acts as editor for all TWH materials appearing in UHN News, ensuring division programs and people are regularly covered.
  • Understands the clients’ culture/issues or concerns of staff and communicate these to VP of Public Affairs.
  • Performs media relations activities in concert with TWH’s Senior Public Affairs Advisor.
  • Organizes media conferences for clients programs when and where appropriate.
  • Organizes and executes special events.


  • Completion of a recognized post-secondary degree program in communications or other relevant discipline required
  • 1-3 years public relations experience are desirable.
  • Previous on-the-job experience writing for a variety of end products from media releases and feature stories to brochure copy required.
  • Excellent writing, editing, and verbal communications skills required.
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills required.
  • Excellent digital and social media skills required – Web, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn, Vimeo, and other emerging social media platforms.
  • Computer literacy required; preferably Microsoft Office Suite, SharePoint, WordPress
  • Well versed in public relations practices, particularly in the areas of: strategic communications, media relations, internal and community relations, special events management, and on occasion crisis management.
  • Must be able to organize news conferences, plan and execute special events.
  • Ability to establish solid working relationships with staff at all levels required.
  • Ability to work effectively and efficiently under pressure required.
  • Ability to use good judgment in assessing difficult situations required.
  • Ability to juggle work projects required.
  • Understanding of organizational communications required.
  • Marketing communications skills an asset.
  • Knowledge of the fundraising environment an asset.
  • Membership with the International Association of Business Communicators preferred
  • Vaccines (COVID-19 and others) are a requirement of the job unless you have an exemption on a medical ground
    pursuant to the Ontario Human Rights Code.
