University Health Network (UHN) is a research hospital affiliated with the University of Toronto and a member of the Toronto Academic Health Science Network. Techna is a research institute at UHN that is focused on the advancement of healthcare technology.  The Data Science team at Techna is looking for a dynamic Manager to join their team. The team works in close collaboration with care providers, researchers, and educators to develop innovative solutions that collect, manage, and leverage data to facilitate clinical research.  Our systems are used in clinical practice and in multi-site research studies.

Role overview:

This is a challenging, impactful, and highly collaborative position. You will be working as part of the Data Science team in the Cancer Digital Intelligence (CDI) program that sits at the intersection of FAIR data management and machine learning and is responsible for developing innovative health data applications and tools. You will actively solve novel problems, make improvements, troubleshoot independently and with your team.

You will be responsible for managing the product roadmap and development, as well as, guiding and mentoring your development team. To guide development teams, you will leverage existing ideas and develop new insights based on your industry experience and your contact with customers and key opinion leaders. To do this, you should have a unique blend of business and technical savvy, be a good observer and listener, and be able to connect unmet customer needs with product design.

You will be working with Software Developers, Architects, Business Analysts, Designers, and other managers to ensure the success of your product portfolio and drive the technical roadmap with a premier focus on correctness and innovation.

The ideal candidate should have experience as a product manager in health sciences and bioinformatics.  This role requires experience in using a range of different technologies and frameworks to create innovative healthcare solutions. You will work on novel health technologies that will help accelerate cancer research, including health data interoperability platforms and integrated predictive models.

You will be working within a dynamic team and you will learn and adapt rapidly while working in Agile mode. You will have the option to work remotely, on-site, or hybrid, with flex-hours.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES

Individual responsibilities

  • Identify new technological opportunities and work with leadership to prioritize and execute to achieve defined outcomes
  • Translate business needs into technical requirement documentation and related resources
  • Measure and track success and failures for internal stakeholders to demonstrate the value created by the team.
  • Use a data-informed decision-making process, and identify new opportunities and provide sound reasoning for strategy decisions from that data
  • Leverage strong problem-solving skills - deal with ambiguity, gather information, prioritize, and drive execution on objectives, ensuring they ladder up to key strategies in an iterative and incremental way
  • Develop and communicate product insights, positioning, and value proposition throughout the organization creating alignment around the goals.
  • Lead and oversee all aspects and day to day operational and administrative functions of our National projects in the Data Science Team
  • Collaborate with research programs, principal investigators and other stakeholders in enabling research and optimizing clinical care at UHN and partner organizations
  • Work closely with the Techna leadership team in the development and implementation of operational and strategic initiatives
  • Supervise the technical staff, fostering a positive, collaborative, customer-oriented working environment?
  • Ensure efficient operational processes, and effective allocation of resources

 Team responsibilities

 QUALIFICATIONS

  • Masters Degree, or recognized equivalent, in Health Science, Computer Science, Health Administration or related field
  • At minimum, up to five (5) years of relevant and/or related experience in health related field
  • At minimum, two (2) years of experience in supervising and mentoring staff, ideally software developers
  • At minimum, two (2) years of experience as a Product Manager on SaaS enterprise products or platforms with technically complex infrastructures
  • A background as a software engineer or have experience building data pipelines and working with modern data infrastructure (e.g. Kubernetes, data processing engines such as Spark or Beam, massively scalable databases such as Redshift or BigQuery)
  • A proven track record in bringing clarity to a complex domain and drive agreement between technical and data teams, and the business
  • Successfully taken new features from conception, through launch to adoption, engagement, and retention
  • A technically curious approach to product management; systematically self-educating on our tech stack and relevant literature on the technology you are representing
  • Experienced in project management with familiarity on both Agile and Waterfall methodologies and to be able to apply them where best suited
  • Strong communication skills and ability to influence others.
  • Experience influencing cross-functional teams to achieve outcomes over outputs
  • Experience working directly with highly technical stakeholders
  • Solid understanding of software development lifecycle
  • Experience with Java, SQL, Oracle, Mongo, RDF, HL7, FHIR, Javascript, Angular an asset
