This an exciting time to join our growing team, and work with dynamic collaborators across the nation. The Upstream Lab aims to improve the health and well-being of patients by driving upstream action on social determinants, and support the integration of upstream prevention approaches within primary healthcare in Canada and beyond. 

We are currently looking for a Full-time Communications Specialist to assist with the planning, organization, and implementation of key communications and marketing initiatives.  In this role you will help drive public interest and engagement by building awareness of our research projects, impacts and results, and play a critical role in developing communication strategies for recruitment. 

As part of this role, you will also manage the development and implementation of a communication plan for  CanTreatCOVID, one of the largest adaptive platform COVID trials in Canada.  This adaptive platform trail will evaluate emerging treatments for COVID in out-patient and community settings.

 

Duties and Responsibilities:

Performs Communication management responsibilities

  • Lead the planning and execution of multi-channel promotional and marketing campaigns, including advertising, digital, and social media platforms to promote awareness of research studies and recruitment initiatives.
  • Develop effective recruitment strategies and required documents, including study-specific promotional materials and advertising
  • Works with research staff to develop outreach and marketing strategies to address upcoming recruitment needs
  • Documents recruitment activities and results for individual studies and evaluates the success of different approaches to inform future recruitment strategies
  • Provides coordination support for outreach and knowledge translation events
  • Performs industry research and contributes innovative ideas and solutions
  • Supports senior staff with day-to-day internal and external communications
  • Work with academic and industry professionals and subject matter experts to create and develop cutting edge and engaging content (i.e. articles, stories, news, videos, case studies etc) that showcase our research, partners, and assets
  • Coordinates meetings, materials and correspondences with staff, agencies, volunteers, key stakeholders, media and government officials
  • Develop measurement tools to evaluate the impact of communication strategies

Performs other communication duties/support

  • Develop and maintain social media platforms, and remain current with frequent developments in social media platforms and trends
  • Write website and content and develops graphics to support all communication channels.
  • Develop content for newsletter  
  • Liaises between advertising and public relation agencies, internal communications, and partner organizations to increase the reach of promotional and recruitment materials
  • Coordinate media request with staff and spokespeople

Performs Event Planning and Coordination

  • Plans and coordinates logistics related to in-person and virtual events
  • Manages the accreditation process for events, as needed
  • Designs and coordinates meeting agenda with support from upper management and planning committee
  • Coordinates and manages event by ensuring everything is running on schedule and troubleshooting issues that arise
  • Performs other duties as assigned to support PI’s overall communications strategic direction

 

Qualifications

  • Undergraduate degree/diploma in public relations, communications, journalism or related area
  • Minimum 3 to 5 years of experience required
  • Demonstrated experience and results in successfully developing and implementing communication strategies, public awareness campaign through social media
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Demonstrated ability to handle multiple priorities and be self-motivated in high-pressure, fast-paced and demanding work environment
  • Experience with MailChimp and WordPress an asset
  • Experience developing influential visually compelling communications materials an asset
  • Ability to work effectively in a dynamic team environment (working both independently and as part of a team)
